Younger Children-Play Therapy

I use play therapy to develop a relationship with younger children so that I can understand what’s going on in their world. I use both child-led and therapist-led techniques, depending on the needs of each individual client and the presenting issues. Generally, I find out what the child likes to do and we start there. Through play, children naturally process feelings and experiences that overwhelm them and exceed their level of understanding.

I help children develop coping skills and learn to express their feelings in a way that fosters healthy relationships. Usually, children will know why they’re here and how I can help. When we need to talk about something, we do. Parents are a critical part of their child’s treatment. The parents are always included at the beginning and the end of each session. There may be joint sessions if the situation warrants it or the child requests it.

My top priority is the child’s safety and feeling of comfort. It may look like we’re having fun, and we are. Sometimes, I also like to meet with parents without their child present when there are things that we need to talk about that aren’t appropriate for their child to hear.
